Nitro, WV, is the gateway to some of the best fishing in the region. There are plenty of fishing spots where anglers can reel in a wide variety of fish species. The rivers and lakes hold largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, white, and hybrid striped bass, channel and flathead catfish, muskellunge, walleye, sauger, sunfish, trout, and gar, to name but a few of the fish caught in these waters.
1. The Kanawha River
The Kanawha River, a tributary of the Ohio River, is teeming with fish species. Anglers reel in largemouth, smallmouth, white, spotted and hybrid striped bass, channel and flathead catfish, muskellunge, sauger, walleye, sunfish, freshwater drum, gar, skipjack herring, paddlefish, sturgeon, and shad. If you are going to fish from a boat, one of the best access points is the City of Nitro Boat Launch. There is a 30-foot wide ramp with an ADA-accessible floating dock.
2. Kanawha Falls
It’s a 50.5-mile drive from Nitro but well worth the trip to wet your hook in what is considered the top angling spot in West Virginia. The oxygen-rich water and abundance of plankton in the turbulent waters below the Kanawha Falls produce trophy catches. Walleye up to 15 pounds are regularly hooked here.
Walleye are not the only swimmers caught in these waters. Here you can reel in all three the black basses, white bass, striped, and hybrid striped bass. Anglers regularly hook channel and flathead catfish, black and white crappie, muskie, sauger, sturgeon, paddlefish, sunfish, and freshwater drum.
3. Ridenour Lake
The 16-acre Ridenour Lake is a fantastic fishing destination right in Nitro. Anglers come here to catch trout, largemouth bass, channel catfish, sunfish, and crappie. The lake is stocked in January and March with trout. The best time to hook largemouth bass close to the banks is in early spring to late fall. In spring, white crappie is caught in the deeper waters. There are logs and brush fish attractors at marked locations.
4. Beech Fork Lake
The 720-acre Beech Fork Lake in Wayne and Cabell Counties just south of Huntington provides anglers with a tranquil fishing experience. The 13-mile long lake has 31 miles of shoreline and is full of largemouth and hybrid striped bass, bluegill, sauger, crappie, and catfish.
The Beech Fork Lake Marina has slips and docking for 225 boats. If you don’t have a boat, the marina rents Bennington Deluxe pontoons boats, Tracker bass boats, fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks.
5. Lake Chaweva
The picturesque 13-acre Lake Chaweva, just 4.7 miles from Nitro, is surrounded by woodlands and offers anglers a tranquil and secluded fishing experience. Here you can wet your hook from the dock, fishing pier, or cast your line from a canoe, kayak, or sailboat.
