Forks of Coal State Natural Area
Forks of Coal State Natural Area is a 1,043-acre state park in Fayette County, West Virginia. The park is named after the Forks of Coal River, which flows through the park and then into the Kanawha River. It has been a protected area since 1928.
The park features a campground with 66 campsites, hiking trails, and swimming areas on both sides of the river. The park is located off U.S. Route 19 between Ripley and Oak Hill, West Virginia.
Babcock State Park
Babcock State Park is just a few miles from Nitro and offers many attractions for the whole family. The park has a variety of campgrounds, including primitive sites as well as RV hookups with water and electricity.
There are also cabins available for rent. The park features an 18-hole golf course open from April through September; there is also a snack bar at the course where you can enjoy a delicious meal or snack after your round of golf.
Hawks Nest State Park
The park is located in the Hawks Nest scenic area, which lies at the junction of three rivers. It has a rich history, including Native American sites, a Civil War battle site, and old coal camps.
The park’s open areas provide excellent opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking. A nature center offers exhibits and information about the area’s natural history. The park also has a campground with showers and picnic shelters.
