1. Ridenour Lake
Ridenour Lake on Blakes Creek Road is one of the most popular nearby attractions worth driving to. This is the perfect spot for a large family picnic, and there are five shelters you can choose from. You can rent 10 tables at the pavilion for four hours, or reserve between three and nine sheltered picnic tables.
Besides picnicking, Ridenour Lake is great for fishing. Trout are stocked in January and March, and you can also fish for such warm water fish as channel catfish, crappie, sunfish, and largemouth bass. Fishing may be done from the banks of the lake, accessible via a hiking trail, from 9 AM until sundown daily.
2. Kanawha State Forest
Kanawha State Forest at 7500 Kanawha State Forest Dr is also worth driving to. This popular outdoor enthusiast destination features over 60 miles of trails that can be enjoyed by hikers and bikers alike. Additionally, this state forest is beloved by birders, picnickers, and botany enthusiasts.
Our favorite pedestrian-only trail is the Rattlesnake Trail. This one-mile trail poses a moderate to difficult challenge. If it’s not enough of a challenge, you can take the 0.75-mile Rattlesnake Connector Trail to the challenging half-mile Crabapple Trail.
3. Mardi Gras Casino & Resort
Finally, if you want to feel like a tourist in your own city, we strongly recommend driving down to Mardi Gras Casino & Resort at 1 Greyhound Drive. There are plenty of fun things to do here, including watching greyhound races every day of the week. Live races can be watched Tuesday through Saturday.
You can also find a 65,000-square-foot casino featuring almost 700 slot machines. Additionally, there are over 35 live poker games and table games.
