West Virginia has no shortage of interesting landmarks, but we’ve got some unique ones to show you. If you’re traveling or live around Nitro, WV, we’re here to recommend some off-the-beaten-path places you can check out without leaving the state.
Staats Mill Covered Bridge
Whether you want a great photo opportunity or want to learn some local history, this covered bridge is the place to go. There is no charge for admission here, yet there is enough to do that you could spend an entire day. This location is a well-known backdrop for wedding, birthday, or graduation pictures.
Located on the grounds of the Cedar Lakes Conference Center at 82 FFA Drive, you can walk across this 97-foot-long truss bridge or walk down to the lake below to spend some time by the water. Either way, this unique landmark is definitely one to put on your upcoming travel itinerary.
Mothman Statue
Point Pleasant may be best known for the Mothman sightings of the 1960s, but these days the only way you’ll get a sighting of your own is to travel over to 400 Main St. Here, you’ll find a 13-foot-tall stainless-steel replica of the mythical creature known as Mothman, complete with red eyes the size of footballs, which glow under the right conditions.
If you like seeing a unique landmark, this statue is definitely one for the list. This statue became so popular that Point Pleasant now hosts an annual Mothman festival, which up to 15,000 attend every year.
Cathedral Falls
If you prefer nature to cryptid sculptures, you’ll want to visit Cathedral Falls, which is one of the highest waterfalls in West Virginia. You can find this waterfall, a part of Cane Creek, a mile from the town of Gauley Bridge on East Highway 60. There’s free parking right off the highway, and you can follow the marked trail right to the falls.
Part of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, this natural landmark is beautiful and one of a kind. Featuring a waterfall over 60 feet tall, you’ll enjoy a short hike to get to this hidden gem. Stick around for a couple of pictures, and you just may be lucky enough to see some local wildlife as well.
