4 Great Kid-Friendly Activities in Driving Distance of Nitro, WV

Take the family on exciting outings in a big and comfortable Chevy Traverse, Tahoe, or Suburban, and enjoy a ton of fun kid-friendly activities in and around Nitro, WV. Go on an adventurous road trip, learn more about the town’s impressive WWI history, and discover all the fun outdoors. 

1. Go on a Family Adventure Down the Rivers to Ridges Heritage Trail

Load the kids and everyone’s favorite eats and treats in the Chevy and go on a family road trip down the Rivers to Ridges Heritage Trail. The historic driving trail begins in Nitro and winds 44 miles along the scenic Kanawha River through the rolling hills of West Virginia to Point Pleasant, past various towns, historical landmarks, and interesting roadside attractions.

Stop at the Nitro Wars Museum and Nitro Living Memorial Park and tour Buffalo’s Historic District. Visit the lower Kanawha River Valley’s Civil War sites and fascinating places where George Washington and Mad Anne Bailey left their mark. 

2. Learn about WWI at the Nitro Wars Museum 

The Nitro Wars Museum at 2003 20th Street showcases Nitro’s rich WWI history as a bustling World War I boomtown that produced gunpowder for the American troops and their Allies.

The museum displays an extensive collection of artifacts and memorabilia from various wars, featuring a replica WWI trench, military uniforms, photographs, and blueprints of the plant where the gunpowder was manufactured. The museum is open Monday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but a donation is greatly appreciated. 

3. Get Outdoorsy in Ridenour Lake and Park

Get the kids away from their screens for a while to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings at the 47-acre Ridenour Lake and Park at the end of 21 Street in Nitro. Hike or bike down the mile-long trail around the lake to admire the view, or head into the hills to spot native and migratory birds.

Kayak or paddle board and fish in the well-stocked lake for trout, largemouth bass, sunfish, channel catfish, and crappie, play with Fido in the dog park and enjoy a family picnic in the scenic picnic area. 

4. Have Loads of Fun at the Nitro Athletic Complex

The brand-new Nitro Athletic Complex at 1650 Park Avenue in Nitro is a great place to spend quality time with the kids. There are all sorts of fun recreational activities, including pickleball and tennis courts and a splash pad for the little ones. The Nitro City Pool, that’s been modernized and updated, remains a favorite gathering place for families in the hot summer months.
