When it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, no state can beat wild, wonderful West Virginia. Covered in ancient mountains, rolling hills, and a deep sense of history within its many hollers and river valleys, taking a walk around these majestic parts will invoke inspiration, relaxation, and a chance to bond with family. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the best hiking trails in and around Nitro, WV, so you can enjoy a weekend getting back to nature.

1. Ridenour Lake Trail

Within the town of Nitro, you’ll find the beautiful green space that is Ridenour Memorial Park, home of our first favorite trail, the Ridenour Lake Trail. Located minutes from all that Nitro has to offer in businesses and restaurants, this trail offers weekend hikers an easy chance to get back to nature.

The loop is just over 1 mile in length and is perfect for all skill levels. Dogs are welcome on the trail as well, and the lake that it encircles offers other fun activities during the summer months.

2. Meeks Mountain Trails

A new trail system located in the near town of Hurricane, WV, the Meeks trails offer a variety of skill-level paths for hiking enthusiasts. The trails have been lovingly created and cared for by the Meeks family with the goal of promoting health and wellness in the area.

3. Kanawha Boulevard Trail

An asphalt, urban trail running along the northern bank of the Kanawha River, the Kanawha Boulevard Trail is located within the capital city of Charleston, WV, and offers a chance to step away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the river. The full trail runs 5.8 miles, and trail-walkers will pass right by some of the city’s most prominent landmarks, including the historic capital building and the governor’s mansion.

4. Mary Ingles Trail

A quaint hiking path that is rated for moderate-level hikers, the Mary Ingles Trail is located in nearby Winfield and runs a little over 11 miles in length. The hike is great for varied scenery and wildflowers in the spring and summer.

5. Spotted Salamander Trail

Taking advantage of the nearby Kanawha State Forest, the Spotted Salamander Trail is the best place to start for beginner hikers. The path is less than half a mile in length, loops around, and is even wheelchair accessible. As an interpretive trail, it’s perfect for younger families and to take nice pictures together.

6. Crown Jewel Trail

A lesser-known path also nestled in the Kanawha State Forest, the Crown Jewel Trail offers a higher skill challenge for more experienced hikers. The trail is just 2 miles in length, but the absence of foot traffic makes it a great place to get away. Plus, rumor has it that the trail offers some fantastic views, but we won’t spoil the fun!
