Located in the eastern part of the state, the city of Nitro, WV has a population of about 7,000 and is known for its history as a major production center for ammunition during World War I in the United States. 1. Columbus, OH

Located just 150 miles away from downtown Nitro, the city of Columbus is a great destination for visitors looking for a bustling metropolis with an almost endless number of touristic attractions, cultural centers, good restaurants, and historical monuments. The capital and most populous city in the state of Ohio has a population of more than two million in its metropolitan area and is known for its early history as a Native American settlement along the Scioto River.

Nowadays, Columbus attracts millions of visitors from all over the country every year, with attractions such as the Columbus Museum of Art, the Ohio Statehouse, the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and the Scioto Mile. Getting here from Nitro takes around two and a half hours by car, driving along routes US-23 S and US-35 E. Once in the downtown area, most tourist spots can be reached on foot.

2. Monongahela National Forest, WV

Spanning an area of more than 920,000 acres in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains, the Monongahela National Forest is a prime day trip destination for anyone wanting to enjoy some time in nature, go on relaxing hikes, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of eastern West Virginia. This National Forest was established in 1920, and since then, it has attracted thousands of visitors every year. From downtown Nitro, getting here takes a little under two and a half hours by car.

3. Crown City Wildlife Area, OH

Located less than 60 miles northwest of downtown Nitro, the Crown City Wildlife Area is another excellent spot for nature lovers, anglers, and anyone wanting to enjoy some time in nature. This spot features more than 11,000 acres of territory and is popular among visitors for its several designated fishing areas, campgrounds, hiking trails, and picnicking spots.
